What should I read as an intro politics, government, and general world events?

By admin ~ September 7th, 2011 @ 11:39 am

I’ll be a senior in High School, next year, and I’m taking a course in both U.S. Government and Economics.
However, I feel I’m really behind my classmates in knowing about the workings of the world, politics-wise.
Are there any good books you can recommend as an introduction to government and politics that I can read before school begins?
Something that assumes the reader knows little to nothing, I mean…
Thanks !
Sorry, I meant “as an intro TO politics”.

First understand how our money system works, you will be far ahead of your peers, here skip to 4 min to avoid long intro.

    Mark Levin’s “Liberty and Tyranny”.
Barry Goldwater’s “Conscience of a Conservative”

The US Constitution is a great start. Read about politics on the internet and in the newspaper. Search the websites on different political parties and find out what they stand for and what the hot issues are. I find the writings of Thomas Jefferson to be intriguing. Rush isn’t worth reading.

That was trippy, the democratic party is the only website that offers a spanish option.

Atlas Shrugged is fiction, a damn good book, but fiction.

There are all sorts of things you can read. You can peruse The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx. Other options include Articles of the Confederation, Common Sense by Thomas Paine, The Preamble, or even the U.S. Constitution itself. The sky is the limit.

    Right here.

Read these two books first. Very useful.
The 5000 Year Leap – describes how the government was formed.
Liberty and Tyranny (available in audio) – describes the current politics.

I would suggest “Atlas Shrugged, but it is 56 hours on audio and 1000 page book. It is worth it though. It shows how the government responds to crisis and the results.
    Federalist and anti-federalist papers

Anything by Thomas Sowell would probably be helpfull to you, but I particularly recomend his books “Economic Facts and Fallacies and “Basic Economics”(third edition) he is extremely smart and he writes in a way that allows any body to understand him, you don’t have to be a genius.
Also I would recomend “The Forgotten Man” BY Amity Shlaes for a perspective on the ecconomics and policies of the Great Depression.
