Do you agree that direct-democracy is better than a representitive democracy?

By admin ~ October 28th, 2010 @ 2:46 am
Contentions:

1. No one can represent you better than yourself.

2. Complete minority representation is ensured, if you vote.

3. The more politicians there are the more you have to pay for.

4. Members of congress can vote themselves pay-raises.

5. Reduced corruption.

Disagreements? Counter-contentions?

I say abolish congress.

Direct democracy is just mob rule

that’s a good idea but how to go about it? it sounds like a massive endeavor to implement.

Just how would an emergency situation get resolved?

You would have to hold a national election for every item for review, from research grants to declaring war.

    Its not a good idea.

I get tired of arguing with idiots, and that is what direct democracy always ends up being.
    Direct Democracy = Anarchy

No not at all. In a direct democracy the minority is tyrannized by the majority. The founding fathers of the U.S. had very good reason to make the country a constitutional republic.

gah!!!! im going to burn something next time someone calls america a frickin Democracy!!!! its a Republic theres a big difference!!!! let me give you teh definitions

A Republic is representative government ruled by law (the Constitution). A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority (mob rule). A Republic recognizes the inalienable rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with group wants or needs (the public good).

Sounds great in theory but in real world will not work with anything other then an extremely small population. It would lead very quickly to a dictatorship of the 50.001% who voted on something. Emergency situations could not be dealt with quickly and honestly people would not look into or research things because they would not have time. People won’t spend a few hours every four years voting for President and you think they would spend hours daily researching and voting on things? Sounds great in theory but is not practical.

Two Lions and one Antelope get together to vote on what they are going to have for dinner tonight.
Do you want to be the Antelope? Or would you rather have someone vote for you who has an interest in your well being? If you don’t know the right answer to this question…then you are too young to vote or you need help that only a Licensed Physician can provide.

No. Representative democracy saves us from mob-like decisions. No country would survive with a direct democracy.
