10 Ways to Win at Office Politics

Lets face it, there are always going to be politics at the office and the best thing you can do is to learn how to play the game. Here are our ten tips to help you win at office politics and still gain other colleagues respect.

1. Emotional intelligence – Work with emotional intelligence. Do not personalise problems – it’s not about you, but about work. You do not have to be best friends to work with a work colleague. Learn to get along and work with people who appear not to like you or whom you may not like.

2. Be a team player – Take the initiative and offer your help when someone in your team is struggling. This is a good way to build a working relationship or break the ice with someone you don’t have a rapport with. They will be very grateful for your help.

3. Help your boss in becoming a success – Never make your boss look bad. If you create a situation where your boss is seen in a negative light, you’ll be the one who pays the price in the short run.

4. Treat people with respect – Treat everyone with respect. Don’t show preferential treatment or treat work colleagues badly. You never know who someone might be connected to and rude behaviour may come back to bite you.

5. Master the art of timing – Spend less time talking and more time listening. People often let things slip. Be patient and wait for the right time to say or ask something.

6. Be diplomatic- Learn to respond without emotion to stressful situations. For example, instead of getting into a shouting match with an irate customer, lower your voice and they will lower theirs to the point of sensible conversation.

7. Profile powerful individuals – Pay attention to their communication style, network of relationships and what types of proposals they say “yes” to most often. Emulate those traits by drawing on the strengths you have.

8. Develop a track record as someone who gets results – Style without substance will not gain others’ respect, especially in today’s companies that focus on outcomes.

9. Don’t be afraid to toot your own horn – Let others know what you’ve accomplished whenever you get the opportunity. If you don’t know the art of diplomatic bragging, you might get forgotten about.

10. Make relationships all around the industry – Relations are the ultimate tool of success in your company. The more people you know, the better for your job and job security.
