The US is a Republic and a Democracy. Which is more important? Would you rather the US be a Republic or Democracy if you had to chose? Which would last longer by itself? And which should we stand by: Our Republic or Our Democracy?

A republic IS a form of democracy, and America cannot and never will be a pure democracy. They tried that in Rome and it was a big failure.

America has and always will be a “Constitutional Republic” and every other form of governement that has been tried in the history of the WORLD has been proven to be inferior.

No, the US is not a democracy. It has democratic values but it is not a democracy. It is a representative republic.

That last time a true democracy existed it ended very badly.

We are a Democratic Republic, where we elect our Representatives to vote our voice on bills and laws.

A pure democracy each person would vote for laws and bills. This with the number of bills and laws would be confusing to most people. With the political IQ of most people they could not handle pure democracy

Neither – Brittany Spears and “stuff” are what matter in America.

well when the actions of our politicans
    compromise our future is Fascism….

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers the individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole. Fascists seek to forge a type of national unity, usually based on (but not limited to) ethnic, cultural, racial, religious attributes. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: patriotism, nationalism, statism, socialization, militarism, totalitarianism, anti-communism, corporatism, populism, collectivism, autocracy and opposition to political and economic liberalism.

just remember fascism is not nazism

The USA is a republic, to quote the pledge of allegiance. And to the republic for which it stands… A democracy is nothing more than a mere popularity contest. large crowds can be swayed very easily. Ask any hypnotist people are very easily influenced. A republic is better that it is someone that represents others. And individual that is a leader that reflects the will of the people.

I would like one party, and that party should be named after our country “United party” (in my dream). They ought to change the name of this country and call it the “Divided States of America.

We are not a democracy, we never were and were never intended to be. we aren’t even a democratic republic.

we are representative republic. the founding fathers despised the idea of democracy.

    republics always last longer.

Both terms are correct, despite what people say.

Democracy is a more general term, Republic is a specific term.

Which type of democracy is better, direct democracy, representative republic, or constitutional democracy? Definitely a type that has elected representatives with a constitution that protects the rights of the minority opinion, so there isn’t mob rule. In the end, the framers of the United States Constitution, most notably James Madison, who developed a system of checks and balances so too much power wasn’t concentrated in one branch of government and a bill of rights were fundamental individual rights are protected, but majority opinion are the basis of contemporary policy hit the nail on the head.

It is a Republic, but it should be anarchy. Every man for himself.

The US is a Republic, not a Democracy. (You can’t be both.)We elect our leaders, and they manage the country.

In a pure Democracy, the citizens vote on everything. A Democracy would never get anything done.

The difference between the 2 concepts tends to disappear as time goes by.
“The term “republic” has many different meanings but today often refers to a representative democracy with an elected head of state, such as a President, serving for a limited term, in contrast to states with a hereditary monarch as a head of state, even if these states also are representative democracies with an elected head of government such as a Prime Minister.” (Wikipedia)
A large republic such as the United States is explicitely a democracy as well. One could claim that “republican democracies”, as opposed to other democracies, try to impose more safeguards against abuses by the majority with regard to the minority. The different states in the US, for example, have equal representation in the Senate to protect them against the imposition of certain measures by the most populated states.
Republicanism originally developed as the anti-thesis of inherited rule and inherited elitism in general. Most modern-day republics are states which have an elected head of state rather than a monarch (“elected” not necessarily in the democratic sense; many self-identified “republics” are not democracies).
